What counts as a plumbing emergency

  • A burst or leaking pipe you can't stop.
  • Sewage or dirty water backing up into drains or toilets.
  • Water pooling near electrical outlets or appliances.
  • No water to the whole home.
  • A water heater leaking from the tank.
  • A gas smell: leave the home and call your gas utility or 911 first.

Do this now

  1. Shut off the water. Use the fixture's valve, or the main shut-off (often near the water meter, in a basement, garage or outside).
  2. Kill power nearby at the breaker if water is near outlets, and only from a dry spot.
  3. Stop using drains if sewage is backing up.
  4. Move valuables and soak up standing water.
  5. Take photos of the problem.
  6. Call a plumber.

What the plumber does

The first job is to stop the water and make things safe. Then the plumber finds the cause (a split pipe, a failed fitting, a blocked main line) and repairs it, or sets up a temporary fix and comes back with parts.
