- Let faucets on outside walls drip on the coldest nights.
- Open cabinet doors under sinks so warm air reaches the pipes.
- Disconnect garden hoses and shut off outdoor spigots from inside.
- Insulate pipes in crawl spaces, attics and garages.
- Keep the heat on, even when you're away.
- Know where your main shut-off valve is before you need it.
If a pipe freezes, keep the faucet open and warm the pipe gently with a hair dryer. Never use an open flame. If it bursts, shut off the main and call a plumber.
